HARARE - A United Methodist Reverend has formed a political party called “Rebuilding Party of Zimbabwe” (RPZ) which will seek national rebuilding using a Christian approach.
Reverend Everisto Chikanga, who is the founding president, officially launched the party at a low key event held in Harare at the weekend.
“I told my elders that I need some time off from the pulpit so that I can concentrate on the party. I ask the Lord to bless and keep Zimbabwe as yours. Shine your face upon us and be gracious to us.
“I request you to establish the RPZ in Zimbabwe in your name. Lord give us hope and strength to do your will,” Chikanga said in a launch statement.
He added: “In order to move forward, RPZ is standing up for national healing, national rebuilding and national building, using Christian values and principles as its guide.”
The launch of the party according to Chikanga was precipitated by the dissatisfaction of citizens in the government of national unity and a decade of economic decline coupled with political impasse that has stalled development.
In addition, he said citizens of the country are worried that the outcome of the imminent election will throw the country into further anarchy and violence.
He said RPZ is seeking to be the third force to dilute the political space and save the country from anarchy.
“RPZ is not an opposition party but a rebuilding party that will seek the mandate of the electorate to form the next government in the next general and presidential elections,” he said.
The new party seeks to rebuild Zimbabwe by establishing a democratic government that will serve the people of Zimbabwe by being accountable, upholding the rule of law and ensuring that public policies best serve the aspirations of the nation.
The party’s secretary general is Edgar Mawunganidze while Ernest Mutumbani is the national organising secretary. Fred Mutemera is the party’s spokesperson. RPZ’s launch follows hard on the heels of the entry into politics of Mthwakazi National Party (MNP) in Bulawayo last week.
