HEAR the Word Ministries in Borrowdale last month gave President Mugabe a $30 million gift raised through a collection at the church.] I am astonished as a Christian, a citizen of Zimbabwe and as an observer of the political scene in Zimbabwe that Hear the Word can be so insensitive, so ignorant of the political and social environment within which your actions in sending Mugabe a "gift" of Z$30 million at Christmas are percieved. I can think of few other actions that have been taken by the Church in recent days that is more shameful and disgraceful. There is no evidence that Mugabe is a Christian in any shape or form, in fact there is growing evidence of his use of witch doctors and others. His actions as a political leader have found condemnation across the world. This article appeared some time back and every time I read it as a christian my heart sinks. Is this what christ would have done or is it trying to buy favours???

This was the response from the Pastor of Hear The Word: Pastor Tom Deuschle, the head of the church, however said the gift was in accordance with the scriptures and should not be interpreted in any way as an endorsement of everything Mugabe is doing. "It wasn't a Christmas present. It was a collection for a gift to the president. It amounted to close to $30 million. The scriptures say that we should honour our leaders," said Deuschle. Deuschle said that whilst there was a lot of controversy regarding Mugabe's leadership, the Bible also teaches Christ's followers to bring grace unto others".
