HARARE - Health and Child Welfare minister Henry Madzorera says the government will set up a US$20 million central fund that will see women receiving free maternity services within the first quarter of 2011. Madzorera said the central fund will greatly improve maternity services as health care institutions would offer their services to expectant mothers and claim from the fund. “We want to set this fund up in the first quarter of this year, subject to availability of funds. We also need an additional US$700 million which will be rolled out in three years,” he said. Madzorera said government had conducted a bottleneck study that revealed that user fees presented a challenge a major challenge to expectant mothers. He said HIV and AIDS contributed to 25 percent of maternal deaths and that his ministry was working on strengthening mother to child transmission by testing all women who registered for ante-natal clinic. I remember when my wife was expecting our son in Zim. Everything medical was free during the pregnancy and after the child was born, everything was free for mother and child for 5 years, imagine....I believe Sally Mugabe set up the programme....I doubt it's still running now though....
